Dear Folks at LNA,
I've set up the page to give you a little information about what we'll be doing at my presentations at your conference in Vidalia in October.
People don't buy what they need, they buy what they want.
There is probably no comment more true about the nature of our species than that. I might need to lose weight -- but until I WANT to lose weight, I won't do it. I might need to work on my relationship -- but until I WANT to lose weight, I won't do it. And I might need a notary -- but until I want one, I won't hire one.
The question is, "how do we appeal to the wants of our clients first and foremost?"
Don't get me wrong, people are emotional beings, not irrational beings. Therefore, after we appeal to the WANTS of our clients, we MUST back it with logic.
That -- boiled down -- is what marketing is all about. It's about communicating feelings and images to the right brain and backing up what we say with facts and detail for the left brain, And, beyond that, it's about "how do we do it efficiently, honestly, and ethically?"
Those are just some of the things we'll be going over in the morning session at the conference in Vidalia.
In this session, we'll:
- Learn why people buy
- How to talk to the "right brain"
- Develop the best definition of sales you'll ever hear
- Understand better the difference between features and benefits -- and why it's important to know that
- Have fun! This will not be a boring presentation, I guarantee it.
What now?
In order to get the most out of this session, there are two primary actions you can take right now.
- Take a quick survey by following this link
- Download the "pre-work" and get started on it. I guarantee that by the time you complete this assignment, You will know more about marketing your business than 90% of the businesses in the country. You can download the pdf here.

CLOSING SESSION!
I learned after losing 70 pounds that I am a "recovering perfectionist." My creed when dieting was, "Well, as long as I blew it, I might as well REALLY blow it! I'll start again tomorrow." And at the end of the day, I feel frustrated, overwhelmed, angry, and overloaded. It eats me up inside. And when I feel like that, I head for the refrigerator, eating my way to comfort -- and harming my health.
What I discovered is I never seemed to move forward with that attitude. So, I developed the theme, "Strive for Imprefection."
Now, your method of handling stress and frustration might not involve eating, like mine. However, we all have bad habits that were designed to comfort us, but over time, have come to hold us back, make us unproductive, ruin our relationships, and even harm our health.
In this session, we'll:
- Take a look at the reasons why we don't move forward
- Understand the positive intention of "bad" habits
- Develop simple, fun, easy-to-use tools that will make us get unstuck
- Learn how to improve our attitude and feel better even when we "blow it"
- Have at least one simple step we can take with us when we leave the conference
A little about my philosophy:
In order to be fair to you, you probably need to know a little about me so you know what to expect.
I am not a "talking head." My presentations tend NOT to follow a script. I interact with the audience. I welcome your opinions. I tend to be "off the cuff," informal, impromptu, and prone to engage in (bad) puns.
- I use a learning technique called "sculpting" a lot of time. It's fun and engaging and my audiences seem to get a lot out of it. (You can see some examples of sculpting by following this link.)
- I believe the number one rule of change is: If guilt and shame were motivational, we'd all be more successful. I believe we're really quick to beat ourselves up and very slow to reward ourselves. I want to help change that by being supportive and encouraging.
- I call myself a THINspirational speaker and columnist (I've had a syndicated column for four years) because I became a professional speaker after losing 70 pounds in 1994. Although I am a Weight Watchers leader and I write about weight loss, I will not be watching what you eat. I would prefer you do not watch what I eat. (Is it a deal?)
As past president of the National Speakers Association (Northern CA chapter), I do this for a living. I am honored to have spoken to audiences across this country and it is my pledge to you that I will do everything I can to make sure the time you spend with me is worth your time, motivational, and educational.
If you would like to read an article about why I am such a firm believer in "Striving for Imprefection,"

What now?
- Please answer this short questionnaire. It's anonymous and will help me do a better job. By the way, at the end of the survey, there's a place where you can leave your contact information if you'd like to go into more depth. (Don't confuse that with the place to sign up for my newsletter; I will NOT contact you directly if you sign up for my newsletter. You will get periodic mailings however.)
- Download the pre-work and complete it. (If you do so by mid-September, I'll bring a gift for you!)
- If you like this kind of stuff, you can take a survey on habit change -- which has nothing to do with this, but is fun.
- You can answer these one-question polls on this page and see how you fit in with others.
- You can contact me directly to say "Hi" or to give me ideas and feedback.
Aside from that, examine the links on this page and come prepared to have a good time.. Don't hesitate to get in touch.
